Sydney Genesis Startup – Disrupt Surfing
A good startup idea is still just a concept until other people, with money and skills, can be convinced the business has a future. That’s why the pitch is so important, so that others will be able to quickly understand the underlying business concept and back with their talent or cash or both.
ATP Innovations recently hosted Sydney University’s Genesis Start-up Competition. This year’s competition comprised 53 teams, and in total 119 people and the largest ever. In the end it came down to five teams. One of the teams, and this year’s Best Commercial Enterprise award went to Disrupt Surfing. Their idea is simple: selling 1005 customisable surf boards online at 50% of the cost. So far more than 1,000 customised boards have been sold to customers in the US, Japan and Europe. Disrupt Surfing also won a place in the muru-D program, supported by Telstra, which provides seed funding and six months of business mentoring and development.
Sydney Genesis is the longest running entrepreneurship program at the University of Sydney. The Sydney Genesis program is open to students and alumni from any background who are passionate about their ideas in business, technology or social entrepreneurship. We are dedicated to helping them bring their ideas to life through workshops, mentoring, networking, funding and prizes.
